Uroczyste odsłonięcie i przekazanie pomnika gen. Stanisława Maczka na dziedzińcu Urzędu Miasta Edynburga

Dzięki wytrwałości członków zarządu Maczek Trust oraz patronów, którzy wspierali zainicjowaną przez Lorda Frasera kampanię, pomnik gen. Maczka zostanie odsłonięty w roku obchodów 100-lecia odzyskania niepodległości przez Polskę. Miejsce, w którym stanie pomnik a które udostępnił Lord Provost Edynburga jest jednym z bardziej prestiżowych miejsc w stolicy Szkocji. Zabytkowy dziedziniec Urzędu Miasta Edynburga położony jest przy wiodącej od edynburskiego zamku do parlamentu Szkocji i Pałacu Holyrood ulicy Royal Mile, naprzeciwko Katedry Św. Idziego. 
Gen. Maczek siedząc na ławeczce na zabytkowym dziedzińcu Urzędu Miasta Edynburga, będzie patrzył na pomnik upamiętniający tych, którzy polegli na frontach I i II wojny światowej. W imieniu władz miasta na wydarzeniu obecny będzie Lord Provost Edynburga.

Gen. Stanisław Maczek po zakończeniu II wojny światowej nie mógł powrócić do Polski i pozostał do końca życia w Szkocji, mieszkając w Edynburgu. Inicjatorem kampanii na rzecz budowy pomnika był Lord Fraser of Carmyllie, który uczestniczył w pochówku Generała jako reprezentant rządu brytyjskiego. Ceremoniał pogrzebowy oraz honory z jakimi gen. Maczek został pochowany zainspirowały go do zainteresowania się postacią Generała i w efekcie doprowadziły do podjęcia decyzji o upamiętnieniu jego osoby. Nagła śmierć Lorda Frasera w 2013 roku, tuż po oficjalnym zaprezentowaniu planów dotyczących budowy, spowodowała wstrzymanie prac nad projektem. Kampania została wznowiona w 2015r. przez General Stanisław Maczek Memorial Trust. Autorem projektu pomnika jest polski rzeźbiarz Bronisław Krzysztof.

Informacje praktyczne:

Uprzejmie informujemy, iż podczas odsłonięcia pomnika w pobliżu City Chambers zaplanowane jest inne wydarzenie – indyjskie święto świateł Diwali. Uroczysta procesja wyruszy z Royal Mile naprzeciwko City Chambers w stronę Mound o godz. 14.00. Podczas odsłonięcia nie będzie możliwości wjazdu na Royal Mile samochodami.

Organizatorzy nie zapewniają miejsc parkingowych dla uczestników wydarzenia.

Prosimy o okazanie biletu przy wejściu na dziedziniec przed Urzędem Miasta Edynburga.

A ceremony of unveiling of the Maczek Memorial and the presentation to the Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, The Rt Hon Frank Ross at the quadrangle of City Chambers.

A Polish Second World War hero and his men will be honoured with a memorial bench to be placed in the courtyard at the entrance to the City of Edinburgh Council Chambers in the year marking the centenary of Poland regaining its independence.

General Stanislaw Maczek was Commander of the 1st Polish Armoured Division and appointed by Winston Churchill to the role of defending Scotland’s East coast from potential invasion. He played a key role in the Battle of Normandy preventing the retreat of thousands of German soldiers and with his men liberated parts of France, Belgium and Holland.

When the Second World War ended he was unable to return to his native Poland as it was under Soviet control as part of an allied agreement. Refused a war pension, he worked as a barman in his adopted city of Edinburgh and with his wife raised a son and two daughters.

After the collapse of the Communist regime in Poland, the head of Chancellery of President Lech Walesa came to Edinburgh and decorated General Maczek with the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest decoration awarded to the most distinguished Poles and to heads of state.

When the General died in 1994 aged 102, Lord Fraser of Carmyllie represented the UK Government at his funeral and heard for the first time about his achievements. Further investigation led Lord Fraser to launch a campaign for a permanent memorial to General Maczek and his men.

Before his untimely death, Lord Fraser launched a public appeal which was revived by family and friends.

The sculpture cast in bronze was made by Polish sculptor Bronislaw Krzysztof following a public appeal to recognise the war efforts of the General and his Polish Armoured Tank Division.

Please be advised that the unveiling coincides with another event – an Indian Festival of Lights, Diwali. A procession up to the Mound is going to start from the Royal Mile outside the City Chambers at 2.00pm. There will be no vehicle access to the Royal Mile at the time of the unveiling.

We are unable to provide parking facilities.
